🌟Our journey to becoming an emotionally safe school🌟

“You belong here, and you can improve with support and practice.”

Over the coming terms, our school will be continuing the whole-school journey to become an emotionally safe school. This approach supports children’s emotional health and mental wellbeing, strengthens positive behaviour, and helps every child feel ready to learn. When children feel safe and understood, they’re better able to concentrate, recover from mistakes, and build a lasting love of learning.

This move is research-informed. Evidence shows that emotionally safe, relational approaches improve wellbeing and learning, while approaches based on fear or humiliation can cause harm – especially for vulnerable children.

A key part of emotional safety is the difference between responsibility and shame. Responsibility says: “I made a mistake – what can I do differently next time?  Can I make it better?” Shame says: “I am bad. I don’t belong.” Shame increases stress and makes it harder for children to regulate, think clearly, and make positive choices.

This work is not about lowering expectations. An emotionally safe school has consistently high expectations, held with clarity and consistency – and made achievable through understanding, support, and an inclusive, adaptive approach. The message is: “You belong here, and you can improve with support and practice.”

We want families to be part of this journey. There will be opportunities to ask questions, learn about the approach, and explore practical strategies for home and school. Thank you for walking alongside us to support behaviour, wellbeing, and learning.

Annwyl Rhieni a Gofalwyr,

What another splendid week in Llanrhidian! During pupils’ EPIC planning across the school, their voices came through loud and clear, they want to create a ‘haka‑style’ welcome dance to accompany our official school welcome, that has been part of Llanrhidian's tradition for a few years now. As a result, we are thrilled to share that we have some exciting sessions booked with dance teacher Emma Morgan, who will be working with both teachers and pupils from now until Easter. We can’t wait to see what they create together… watch this space!

As you are aware, our Spring Parents’ Evening is scheduled for 9th and 10th February. You will soon receive a link to book your slot with pod staff, so please keep an eye out for that.

As always, please see below for more exciting updates and upcoming events happening across our school community.

πŸŒŸπŸ“š How to Use Our Pod Pages! πŸ“šπŸŒŸ

At Llanrhidian Primary, we know how important it is for grown ups at home to feel connected to the learning that happens in school. That’s why we’ve created Pod Pages — a simple, accessible way to stay in the loop with everything your child is exploring in class.

We like to call this approach “flip learning.”

It means that all the key learning information from school, from objectives to videos, resources, and helpful links — is available for families before and after lessons. Whether your child wants to revisit something they learned today, get ahead on tomorrow’s lesson, or simply share their learning with you, our Pod Pages make that possible.

Need a Little Extra Guidance? 🀝

We know that every family supports learning in different ways, and we’re always here to help.
If you have any questions about how to use Pod Pages or how to support your child’s learning at home, please speak to the team in your pod — we’re always happy to guide you.

Where to Find Pod Pages

Getting started is easy!

  1. Visit our school’s Home Page.
  2. Click on “Pods” in the main menu.
  3. Choose your child’s pod.
  4. Select “Pod Flip Bits” — this is where all the magic happens!

Inside each Pod Flip Bits section, you’ll find the current learning objectives, the week’s focus and useful resources.

🌟BIRP🌟

We’ve been seeing the positive impact of our Ready, Respectful, Safe (RRS) approach across all pupils 🌟. Alongside this, we have introduced a new strategy called BIRP, which is based on circular, natural consequences. It is already proving to be very effective 😊.

BIRP stands for:

  • B – Behaviour
Supporting children to recognise and understand the behaviour that has taken place 🧠.

  • I – Immediate response "ask a teacher for help"
Ensuring an adult is there straight away to support and guide. πŸ‘©‍🏫.

  • R – Restorative approach
Encouraging reflection, conversation, and repairing relationships 🀝.

  • P – Positive actions
Helping pupils choose steps that move things forward in a constructive way 🌈.

We are noticing a shift away from a culture of blame and towards greater self reflection and responsibility across the whole school πŸ’¬βœ¨.

We’d love to hear your thoughts as we continue developing this approach together πŸ™Œ
