Investigations

Investigations

In Llanrhidian, science investigations must not only develop a range of skills, but must also link to the real world.   We believe that when children see the relevance of learning, they are able to develop the knowledge and understanding needed to support progress.  This is why we always follow the HAKA approach when planning our investigations.

The following documents help teachers design stage appropriate investigations for their learners.  They will be adapted to link with the whole school topic, and any current and relevant events.

Key Scientific Vocabulary

It is vital that pupils develop a progressive scientific language to support their learning, and to enable them to explain their thinking.   Below is a list of key vocabulary that teachers will develop through the teaching of science, and all other AoLEs.

Progression of Scientific Vocabulary

Investigation Planners using the HAKA approach.

The intention of these planners are to support the teacher in planning and preparing for learning.  The HAKA approach is firmly rooted in the 12 pedagogical principles. Underpinning all science in Llanrhidian is “active and experiential” learning leading to high quality outcomes for pupils. We believe that Science needs a balance of knowledge, concepts and skills that can be applied in learning across all AoLEs, and beyond the school gates.
