Sentence Starters:
Explaining why a card is at the top:
  • “I think this is the most important because...”
  • “This has a great impact because...”
  • “If this happens, it can lead to...”

Explaining why a card is in the middle:

๐Ÿง  What do we know about memory?

Let's discuss and find out!

Now let's test what you have learnt!

Can you colour in the brain and label the hippocampus?

It's your turn to create a spider diagram, listing as many impacts that screen time can affect!

๐Ÿง  Top Tips:

  • Remember to use the impacts we discussed in your diamond rank.

  • Use the vocabulary sheet below to help you.

Vocabulary:

Short-term memory Holds things for a little while (like remembering a phone number for a few seconds).

Long-term memoryStores things for a long time (like how to ride a bike).

Hippocampusa small brain structure that helps us store and find memories.

Dopamine - a chemical in our brain that makes us feel happy when we do something fun, like playing games.

 L.O: To identify variables.

I wonder, what are we investigating? Beth wyt ti'n meddwl?

How does ___affect___?

Let's Activate Our Prior Knowledge!

Independent Variable

  • What it is: The thing you change on purpose in an experiment.
  • Example: If you're testing how screen time affects memory, the type of activity you do before the memory task (screens or reading) is the independent variable.

๐Ÿงช Think: “I change this.”

๐Ÿ”น Dependent Variable

  • What it is: The thing you measure in the experiment.
  • Example: In the same experiment, how many pictures remembered is the dependent variable because it depends on what activity is done before the memory task.

๐Ÿ“ Think: “I measure this.”

๐Ÿ”น Controlled Variables (also called control variables)

  • What they are: The things you keep the same to make the test fair.
  • Example: You might keep the same amount of time on the activity, the amount of time for the memory task, and the same pictures in the memory task for each group.

โš–๏ธ Think: “I keep these the same.”

Why are variables important? They help the scientist create a fair test!

Now let's have a look at OUR experiment. Discuss your three types of variables.

Now open your chilli of choice and answer question 3.

Ensure you use the subheadings:

Dependent Variable:

L.O: To write a prediction

What do you know about the affect of screen time? Think about how this could impact our memory? Beth wyt ti'n meddwl?

๐Ÿง  Tips for Writing a Good Prediction

  1. Start with “I predict that…”

    • This helps clearly show it’s a prediction.
    • Example: I predict that people who use screens for longer will remember fewer images…”
  2. Use a ‘because’ to explain your thinking

    • Always give a reason for your prediction.
    • Example: …because too much screen time makes it harder for our brain to focus.”
  3. Include a scientific reason

    • Use science words like memory, recall, and attention.
    • Example: Memory needs attention, and screens can make attention jump around.”
  4. Use 2er words (comparatives)

    • These help show the difference you expect.
    • Examples: fewer, quicker, slower, harder
  5. Use evidence from research or past experiments

    • Mention what you’ve learned before.
    • Example: “In my research, I have learned that screens before bed can disturb sleep, and poor sleep makes memory weaker.”

My Prediction:

I predict that... I think that because...

I predict that... I think that because.... (use the words fewer and more)

I predict that... this means that... (use the words fewer and more). I think that because... In my research I learnt that...

I predict that group with more screen time will remember ______ than the others because the ______ variable (________), will affect the ________ variable (________). This is because... Research shows that...

Amser i arbrofi... Time to experiment!!

L.O: To record results in a table.

How will we record our results?

Conclusion:

I found out that... I noticed that...

I found out that... I noticed that the group who_____ remembered... (use the words fewer and more).
This happened because...

I found out that... This means that the group who... (use the words more and fewer).
I think this happened because... In my research I learnt that...

I found out that the group who____remembered_____ compared to the group who _________. This suggests that the independent variable (____) affected the dependent variable (_____). I think this happened because... Research shows that...
