Working Together for Excellent Attendance ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ“š

Regular attendance is vital for every child’s learning, progress, and wellbeing ๐Ÿ“šโœจ. Throughout the school year, we carefully monitor attendance to ensure pupils can fully enjoy their learning, achieve their potential, and feel confident in school.

We kindly ask for your support in helping your child attend school regularly and arrive on time ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜Š. By supporting each other, we can give every child the best chance to thrive and succeed ๐ŸŒŸ.

    ๐ŸŒŸBig Feelings, Safe Spaces๐ŸŒŸ

Understanding Your Child’s Emotions: The Sponge Brain Explained ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿงฝ๐Ÿ’›

Children’s brains work hard all day to manage feelings, behaviour and big emotions ๐Ÿ˜ฎ‍๐Ÿ’จโค๏ธ. The part of the brain that helps them stay calm and think things through is called the prefrontal cortex — think of it as the brain’s “control centre” ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ. It’s the part that helps children pause, listen and make good choices ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™‚.

But this control centre can only handle so much before it becomes overwhelmed ๐Ÿ˜ต‍๐Ÿ’ซ.

    ๐Ÿงฝ The Sponge Metaphor

A helpful way to imagine this is to picture the brain as a sponge:

    • Throughout the day the sponge fills up with “water” ๐Ÿ’ง: noise, emotions, expectations, changes, tiredness, screens, routines and worries.
    • As the sponge gets full, children can become unsettled ๐Ÿ˜•.
    • When the sponge overflows, children can’t think clearly or stay calm — this is when we see behaviours linked to fight, flight, freeze, fawn or flop ๐Ÿƒ‍โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ถ‍๐ŸŒซ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜จ๐Ÿซ .
    • Just like a real sponge, an overflowing emotional sponge needs time to “wring out” โณ๐Ÿงฝ.
    • The thinking part of the brain takes around 15 minutes to reset and come back online ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿง .

Why Children’s Sponges Fill More Quickly Today ๐Ÿ“ฑโฐ๐ŸŒ

Children and young people often have fuller sponges than ever before because:

    ๐Ÿ“ฑ Lots of screen time

    • Blue light from phones, tablets and whiteboards can be stimulating and addictive.
    • When screens are removed, children can feel stressed or unsettled ๐Ÿ˜ฃ.

    โฐ Very busy lives

    • Many children have long, full days with less time for calm connection or quiet play ๐Ÿงฉ๐Ÿ’ฌ.

    ๐Ÿ  Household pressures

    • Family stress, financial worries and parents working from home all add to the emotional load ๐Ÿ˜”.

    ๐ŸŒ Big world events

    • Some children still carry stress from the pandemic or from seeing worrying news ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ.

    Our Sponges Matter Too ๐Ÿงฝโค๏ธ‍๐Ÿฉน

Adults also have limited sponge capacity. When we’re stressed or tired, it becomes harder to stay calm or respond with patience ๐Ÿ˜ฎ‍๐Ÿ’จ. Children pick up on this quickly.

Taking care of our own emotional “sponge space” helps us support our children more effectively ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’›.

How We Can Help Children Regulate ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿง

The goal is to support children without overfilling their sponge — or our own.

One simple strategy is takeโ€‘up time:

    1. Give an instruction once ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.
    2. Pause for a minute or two โณ.
    3. Allow the child time to process before repeating or stepping in ๐Ÿ™‡‍โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™‡‍โ™‚๏ธ.

This short pause helps their brain settle and reduces stress for everyone ๐Ÿ’›.

     Annwyl Rhieni a Gofalwyr,

As we reach Spring Half Term, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate what has been a wonderful few weeks of learning and growth. Spring is always one of our favourite times in school, routines are embedded, confidence is blooming, and the pupils are really thriving within their pods. It’s been a joy to see their progress take flight.

A huge DIOLCH to everyone who joined us for Spring Parents’ Evening. We truly value the opportunity to talk with you about your child, share their achievements, and look ahead to what’s next for them. Your support makes such a difference.

A reminder that after half term we will be entering Welsh fortnight as we prepare for our Marchnad Dydd Gwyl Dewi! During this fortnight pupils will be crafting, baking and dancing! On March 6th from 1:30pm we will be holding our Marchnad Dydd Gwyl Dewi and opening our Caffi so please come and join us for a cuppa and a slice of cake and browse the pupil stalls.

Wishing all our families a happy, restful, and well deserved halfโ€‘term break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back soon, refreshed and ready for more exciting learning adventures.
