LO. To take away objects from a set to find ‘how many left?’

Can you make the calculation using ten frames? Then show the subtraction by crossing off the squares that the calculation is telling you to. Write the calculation and answer next to each ten frame.

    Horton & Rotherslade

LO. To subtract one-digit numbers using a written method.

Show the subtraction calculation using the number lines.

    Rhosilli

LO. To subtract one-digit numbers using a written method.

Subtract these numbers by first trying to get to the number to the nearest multiple of ten that is below the starting number. Then use the remaining value to subtract from that multiple of ten. See the example below for added support.

LO: Recognise that numbers can be broken down and recombined in different ways.

When I travel to the Wonders of the World, I collect all sorts of amazing artefacts. Some I give to museums, some I trade with other explorers, and some are so big that I have to break them into smaller pieces to count them properly.

Today, you’re going to help me! You’ll use your base‑10 resources to sort and subtract the artefacts I’ve collected. Start with the number of artefacts in your explorer’s pack, roll the dice to see how many to give away, and record your subtraction in your book. If you don’t have enough ones or tens, visit the Museum Exchange Desk to exchange a big piece for smaller ones — just like exchanging one ten for ten ones.
