Knowing how to write a formal letter is a very important life skill.
Although a lot of our day-to-day written communication is by email, text message or social media, there are many times you will still need to write a formal letter: to apply for your dream job, make a formal complaint, communicate with companies or customers, or even write to your local Member of Parliament.
In order to do this successfully, you need to know the rules and conventions of writing a formal letter so that you create the right impression.
Can you tell the difference between formal and informal language? Let's see!!
In your warm up pack you have been given a letter but it is all jumbled up!! Can you put it in the correct order?
Done? Read the letter and underline any key phrases that you think make the letter more formal.

We are going to investigate the success criteria of a formal letter in the style of an IQ!
For this you will need a copy of a formal letter. You can choose red chilli or orange chilli.

1. What is the layout of a formal letter?
Stick the WAGOLL in your book. Label the following features:
- Address of the sender
- Address of the recipient
- Opening paragraph
- Middle paragraph
- Conclusion
- Highlight an example of formal language

3. Read the WAGOLL, make a list of formal phrases you like the sound of and might want to magpie for your formal letter.
Explain how formal and informal letters are the same and different. You may use a Venn diagram if you wish.
