Below is a WAGOLL letter from an evacuee to their family back home all about VE day celebrations.

Dear Mum and Dad,

I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to tell you all about the VE Day celebrations we had in the village. It was such a joyous occasion, and I wish you could have been here to see it all! The whole village came together, and we filled the streets with laughter and cheer.

On the morning of the 8th of May, we decorated our houses with colourful bunting and flags. Everyone wore their best clothes, and some even dressed up in outfits from the 1940s to show their pride. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, and I could hear people singing songs from the war, celebrating the end of the conflict.

We had a huge picnic in the park, with tables full of delicious food. Mrs. Jones made her famous apple pie, and I think I must have had three pieces! The local band played some lively music, and many of us danced, clapping our hands and twirling around.

The day ended with fireworks lighting up the sky, and it reminded me of the stories you used to tell me about celebrating peace. I really wish I could share these moments with you, but I promise to tell you all the details when I return home.

With all my love,

Your son, Tom.
