LO: To understand the effect exercise has on the body (HR).
LO: To understand the effects of a healthy diet on physical, emotional and mental health.
We are going to be doing a simple test to see how heart rate (HR) is affected by doing sprints.
Warm up in pairs discuss:
What are some signs that you have made your HR increase?
What do you think the results will show?

Heart rate is measured in beats per minute (bpm). During exercise the heart rate increases so that sufficient blood is taken to the working muscles to provide them with enough nutrients and oxygen. An increase in heart rate also allows for waste products to be removed.
Maximal heart rate can be worked out by the following equation:
Maximum HR = 220 - age
Practical:
In groups of 3 you are going to measure your resting HR in class after sitting still for 5 minutes. You’re then going to go outside and do 5 sprints measuring your HR and recording the results after every sprint. Rest for 1 minute between sprints.
Main Task:
1. What does exercise do to our bodies?
What happens when we exercise? Did your HR increase?
Describe how you felt and what changes you noticed to your body once you exercised. How does exercise benefit us?
What happened when you exercised? What happens inside your body when you exercise?

2. Can you create a table and graph to show our HR results?
Create a table showing your results of our test. Create bar graph on JIT5.
Create a table showing your results of our test. Create bar graph on Excel.
Create a table and calculate mean showing the results of our test. Create bar graph on Excel. Calculate your Max HR.
Create a table, calculate mean and graph on excel showing the results of our test. What do you think would happen if we carried on running? Calculate your Max HR.
3. How does exercise help us in school?
How does exercise help you in school? Think about relax & refuel or the ABC circuit.
How does exercise help you in school? Thinks about the research you did in question 1. What does the school implement to help you when it comes to physical activity?
4. What does a balanced diet include?

What nutrients do we need to have a healthy diet and what do they do?
What nutrients do we need to have a healthy diet and what do they do? Can you give examples of foods, maybe a meal containing them all?
Can you create a poster to show what you think healthy eating is?
