  • School Blog Friday 23rd October

    Thu 22 Oct 2020 D Caswell

    Here are this week's headlines:-

    1. Thank you - We have had a brilliant half term, despite all the challenges.  Thank you all for you kind messages of support.  I also want to say a huge thank you to the staff who have worked so hard this half term to keep our pupils safe and well.  I am very fortunate to have such a fantastic team.   Have a fabulous half term, and keep safe. Mrs C x

    2. Fundraising - As you know our opportunities to raise funds have been greatly reduced.  We are continuing to provide stationery for all pupils in school,  but this comes at quite a cost to the school.  Please help us with your support when you are able.  A huge thanks to those who have donated to us this term, purchased 100 club lottery tickets or have given their time to make Freaky Friday a special day.  We really appreciate your support, and this makes a huge difference to the provision we can offer your children.

    3. Parent Meetings - thank you for booking your phone call slot.  Your teachers will be calling you and keeping to time the best they can.  If you need longer than the allocated time, we will need to call back another time. The agenda for the phone call will be to discuss your child's well-being, their progress in Literacy and Numeracy and their home learning.

    4. Letter from the interim director for education - This week we sent out a letter .  If you missed it, please click here. Within this letter there is a strong message that we all need to work together to keep our school safe.

"I would also like to stress how important it is that all parents and carers think twice about social gatherings inside and outside their homes during the next fortnight and beyond. Can I also remind you that if you are dropping off or collecting children from school then you need to follow social distancing and no matter how tempting please do not congregate at the school gates." Helen Morgan Rees

So far our combined efforts have paid off.  Let's hope that this can continue as we progress through the winter months.

    Wed 14 Oct 2020 D Caswell

    Here are this week's headlines:-

    1. Please see a statement from the Local Authority regarding pick up from school.

"It is important for us all to keep following the social distancing rules both in and out of school.

Parents dropping off or collecting children from school should maintain social distancing and although it is tempting to stop for a catch-up or chat, they should leave the vicinity of the school straight away.

Pupils should only be driven to and from school by their parents or a member of their immediate household (people who they live with), unless it is by a relative or friend who is providing childcare where there isno other option."

    2. Podlet Monster Ball:  This year we will be celebrating with a "Freaky Friday" (23rd October) within the school day.  If you are able to help please let us know as we will need some parents to help run the outdoor "Spooky Trail".  In summary.....

    • Bring £2 to support the event
    • Dress up in favourite spooky outfit (No accessories please!)
    • Every pupil will visit the "Spooky Trail" (with a prize)
    • Class fun activities
    • Pupils will all make a spooky healthy treat

    3. Harvesting the Earth's Riches - Monday 9th November 2020

To celebrate harvest this year the children will be participating in a fun day of harvest activities. These activities will give the children a range of knowledge of things we find around us and problems facing the wider world. We are supporting Matthew's House with our food bank this year, so we kindly ask that you donate a small tin, packet, or jar of non-perishable food. If anyone could also donate 20 cm plant pots and/or compost, (at least 72 hours before the day for quarantine) this would be greatly appreciated.

    4. Parent/Teacher Meetings

A reminder that we are offering parents the option of having a parent consultation phone call after October Half Term. Teachers will phone parents between 3.40pm and 5pm during the period from Monday 2nd November to Thursday 5th November. Please contact Jayne if you would like an appointment

    Here are this week's headlines:

    1. New Chair of Governors: We would like to welcome our new Chair of Governors,  Jane Housten.  Jane is currently a parent governor and has two pupils at the school.  She has a wealth of knowledge with regards Children's Rights, as she works alongside the Children's Commissioner for Wales.  As we welcome Jane, we also are sad to say goodbye to Richard Verge who has effectively supported our school for a number of years.  We are very fortunate to have a strong and supportive governing body which has always been very well led.  We now look forward to developing our curriculum and working together to ensure our school is the best it can be for our learners.

    2. After School Club Update: Following a detailed scrutiny  of the costs and serious operational  constraints , governors had concluded that for the foreseeable future  we would have to suspend  the provision of the After School Club.

Despite a number of different challenges we  have endeavoured to keep this facility going for a number of years but continuing pressure on our educational budget means that we can no longer subsidise its provision . Governors agreed to revisit this decision should there be a significant change in circumstances at some future date .

    3. Brrr Wrap up warm! The school needs to keep some ventilation going throughout the school, even as the weather gets colder.  Please can we suggest that pupils wear an extra layer under their polo shirt.

    4. Podlet Monster Ball:  This year we will be celebrating with a "Freaky Friday" (23rd October) within the school day.  If you are able to help please let us know as we will need some parents to help run the outdoor "Spooky Trail".  In summary.....

    • Bring £2 to support the event
    • Dress up in favourite spooky outfit
    • Every pupil will visit the "Spooky Trail" (with a prize)
    • Class fun activities
    • Pupils will all make a spooky healthy treat

    5. Parent/Teacher Meetings:  A reminder that we will be offering parents the option of having a parent consultation phone call after October Half Term. Teachers will phone parents between 3.40pm and 5pm during the period from Monday 2nd November to Thursday 5th November. The phone call will last up to 10 minutes. If you wish to receive a phone call, please contact Jayne in the office with your preferred date and time and we will do our best to accommodate you. Please note that this is an optional meeting and we will be sending home pupil progress reports at the end of term as we did last year. The agenda for the phone call will be to discuss your child's well-being, their progress in Literacy and Numeracy and their home learning.

    6. Our approach to Blended Learning:  I am sure you have all been enjoying the fantastic Pod Pages.  Although these are a lot of fun, they are underpinned by our continuous drive to provide stimulating learning experiences.  Our challenge is to provide the best we can for pupils both at school and at home.  Nothing will replace the learning your child receives in school, however, should your child be at home, but well enough to learn, they are now able to access the same materials that are being used in class.

Agreed Local Authority advice for sending work home is as follows:

    • If pupils are off schools as they are unwell, work is not required to be provided as pupils are likely not to be well enough to complete it.

    • If schools go into a partial or full lockdown, schools will implement their blended/distance learning plans; work will be provided for pupils.

    • If pupils have to go into quarantine, for example, after a trip abroad, no work is required to be set as the teachers will be teaching in class.

    • If pupils are not attending school due to worries related to the virus, no work is required to be provided as school attendance is mandatory. In these cases, the school’s Education Welfare Officer will support families with re-integration.

However, for more information on Llanrhidian's approach, please visit our Blended Learning Page:  Blended Learning Information

    7. Health & Safety -  Our drop off and pick up window does seem to be having a positive effect on parking and traffic.  Thank you everyone!  Just one thing - please could cars driving down the side lane "give way" to pedestrians.  This is very narrow and cars squeezing past pedestrians could cause an accident.  Thank you for your understanding.

Here are this week's main headlines:

    1. Parent/Teacher Meetings

A reminder that we will be offering parents the option of having a parent consultation phone call after October Half Term. Teachers will phone parents between 3.40pm and 5pm during the period from Monday 2nd November to Thursday 5th November. The phone call will last up to 10 minutes. The agenda for the phone call will be to discuss your child's well-being, their progress in Literacy and Numeracy and their home learning.

    2. Pod Pages

Over the last few weeks, we have been all working hard to improve our Pod Pages. Our aim is to provide you and your child with a virtual platform which will support learning before, during and after new skills and activities have been introduced in school.  In addition, our goal is to provide a platform that will help your child continue their learning should their be another instance of school closure i.e. should a class be sent home as a whole group to self isolate. We strongly urge you to support your children to access the website daily at home.

You will begin to notice some changes to our pod pages over recent weeks. The teachers are now working hard to provide a suite of videos which will support your child through the learning process. We have broken these videos into manageable chunks to scaffold and guide your child. We devise the videos according to our HAKA approach:

    H - Hook

Video 1 will provide a video to inspire and motivate your child into engaging with the new skill/concept

    A - Authentic

Video 2 will set an authentic context so your children understand why they are learning these skills/concepts.

    K - Knowledge

Video 3 will guide your child through the learning process.

    A - Application

Video 4 will give your child an opportunity to apply their new skills in a meaningful context.

Your feedback on the new pod pages would be greatly appreciated.

    3. School Uniform
