  • Home Learning - Information for Parents

    Fri 20 Mar 2020 D Caswell

    Dear Parents,

    Home Learning

We understand that home learning will be new for many of you, and we will be working our usual contracted hours to support you, unless re-deployed, self-isolated or unwell.  Next week each Pod will be contacting you via a group email.  (We have used the email you have provided to school).  Pod staff will also use Twitter to let you know when new work and activities are available for pupils.   All work will be electronic.

We have decided not to offer guidance on how you should structure your “learning day” as we believe that you are best placed to decide when and if activities should be undertaken.  However, if you would like some suggestions, these will be available on the class pages. Please note, we will not expect everything to be completed, and you have our full support to make the right home learning decisions in these difficult times.

Each Pod will provide information on the learning that will be appropriate and familiar to your child and their age and stage of learning.

Staff will be setting work and activities through your child’s Hwb Account and the school website (Class Page).  They will be doing their very best to keep a routine, however, there may be times that due to illness or circumstances out of our control that this may not be possible.

Staff will give pupils’ feedback only when it is appropriate and possible to do so.

You have already received a letter from Mrs Jones regarding “Home Learning Literacy” which is still available on the website https://www.llanrhidian.swansea.sch.uk/topic/news-and-events.  Mr Dowsett is currently working hard to develop a numeracy letter of support that will be available on Monday.  We are also trying to set up an additional on-line numeracy support for all learners.  But don’t worry we will keep you fully updated and informed.

Contacting us – Temporary System from Monday 23rd March 2020

Our school is committed to staying in contact with parents during this difficult time.  For this reason, while the school is closed, staff emails may be used for contact during school closure)  Please only use this when necessary.  Staff will do their best to answer in a timely fashion, however there may be times that due to illness or circumstances out of our control that this may not be possible.

  • Letter to Parents - Home Learning Literacy

    Tue 17 Mar 2020 R Jones

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Home Learning - Literacy

We would like to share with you the new class log-ins for the online learning site “Oxford Owl”. The site is particularly useful for online reading books and you will find many of the Oxford Reading Tree books which we have in our school book boxes. The children can also access this link through their pod webpage.

    https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

On the home screen please select “Oxford Owl for Home”.

On the next page you can log in through the “My Class login” button using the login details below.

Once you have logged in, your child can choose the online books from the “My Bookshelf” section.  In addition, the “Parents” section gives you access to a very good selection of online and printable Maths games and other activities

Passwords for each pod (Case sensitive).

Don’t forget, the pod webpages on our new school website are regularly populated by the teachers with age-appropriate links to support your child’s learning at home. In the coming days and weeks, the teachers will be using their pod webpages as a platform to support home learning

    https://www.llanrhidian.swansea.sch.uk/

HWB also has many online tools which we would encourage your children to access at home.  Your children have their own personal log-ins which the older children know. If you need a reminder of your child’s log in details please email the school.

    https://hwb.gov.wales/

If in the future we find ourselves faced with school closure, the staff will continue developing online learning tools which we will keep you updated with.

Many thanks for supporting your children’s learning

    Kind Regards

  • Corona Virus Letter to Parents

    Mon 16 Mar 2020 D Caswell

    March 16th 2020

    Dear Parent/Carer,

We would like to update you following the latest national advice relating to the illness COVID-19 caused by the virus called coronavirus. Parents and carers are naturally worried about the implications for their children and families. We would like to reassure you that our primary concern is to implement any necessary measures to protect children, staff and visitors in our school. We are in constant communication with our cluster feeder schools, Public Health Wales and the Local Authority regarding the health and safety of pupils in our schools.

In line with tonight’s guidance regarding social gatherings, we will be cancelling the Easter Eggstravaganza and postponing Pod Pysgodyn’s performance of Joseph.  Sports club will be cancelled until further notice.

    School Closure

As we continue to follow UK, Welsh Government and Public Health Wales advice, the Council has advised us that all schools should open as normal. The situation is being kept under continuous review and we will advise you immediately if something changes. We are now formulating plans to mitigate the impact of school closure on the continuity of learning for children. Should the school close, we are developing plans to ensure your child will have access to a range of learning activities that you can use at home with your child. This work will continue behind the scenes as the situation across Swansea and Wales remains under review.

    Self-isolation

The latest information is that you should immediately self-isolate at home for 14 days if you, or a member of your household,  have a recent onset of:

    • High temperature and/or
    • A new continuous cough

We will authorise any pupils’ absence taken for self-isolation. Your support with this matter is greatly appreciated and absolutely vital. This will protect others in the community while you are potentially infectious. Our understanding is that NHS 111 will give advice regarding the need for testing and possible hospitalisation if the severity of your symptoms worsens during this self-isolation period.

    Advice for children

    Always

    • Wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
    • Put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards
    • Bring to school your own disposable tissues and follow the advice “Catch it! Kill it! Bin it!”
    • Bring to school your own water bottle

    Never

    • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
    • Share any food or drinks with anyone else

    Advice for parents and carers

    Always

    • Speak with your child about good hygiene as above
    • Visit the following sites for the latest information

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

    https://gov.wales/coronavirus

    https://gov.wales/coronavirus-covid-19-educational-settings-guidance

    • Update the school about any illness in your family or any concerns you have about contact with the coronavirus
    • Stringently follow the guidelines on self-isolation with your children

    Never

    • Be drawn into speculation or believe false information on social media

Please be reassured that we will do whatever is necessary to protect the interests of our school community and we will keep you updated at each stageThe safety of all our community is our utmost concern at this time and we will support your decisions to take the safest option.

Latest Update from the Local Authority (Received 16.03.20)

We want to reassure residents that, in collaboration with our partners, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the wellbeing of our communities.

At the moment council services remain open. Following the government announcement today we will be assessing the position and making further detailed announcements tomorrow.

Government guidance is that schools should remain open for the time being. The message to parents is that, as in other areas of Wales, schools will open tomorrow as normal and the position will be kept under continuous review.

Residents and parents are urged to follow the Government’s revised social distancing guidelines and anyone who is experiencing symptoms should continue to follow Public Health Wales advice which can be found here: https://phw.nhs.wales/topics/latest-information-on-novel-coronavirus-covid-19/

    Kind Regards

  • Corona Virus School Update

    Mon 16 Mar 2020 D Caswell

    Dear Parents/Carers,

Over the weekend we have had a number of queries from anxious parents as the number of people with possible mild symptoms, choosing to self isolate, increases.

As a school, we will continue to be open until instructed otherwise, following the guidelines we have been given.

However, if as a parent, you feel your child is vulnerable due to an underlying medical condition;  you have family that are vulnerable;  or family members have symptoms, then please inform the office and we can use an attendance code for self isolation.

The safety of all our community is our utmost concern at this time and we will support your decisions to take the safest option.

    Kindest regards,

    Donna Caswell

    Headteacher

  • Corona Virus Update

    Sun 15 Mar 2020 D Caswell

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Please see the latest advice from our Local Authority below.

As we continue to follow UK, Welsh Government and Public Health Wales advice, the Council has advised us that all schools in Swansea are open as normal on Monday. The situation is being kept under continuous review and we will advise immediately if something changes. It is also worth noting that the number of days any school is open and the date of school holidays are decided by the Welsh Government and not the Council’.

No additional measures need to be taken above the advice already provided by Public Health Wales.

If you need any further information please go to: https://phw.nhs.wales/coronavirus and there is also general information here for the public: https://www.swansea.gov.uk/coronavirusadvice.
