Its the last week before half term already!  Although its a short term, we are cramming a lot in, especially when we return after the break. Please note the "dates at a glance" at the bottom of this blog to help you plan.

St David's Day is just around the corner and this year it is going to be even better!  The children will be participating in our annual Llanrhidian Eisteddfod which is always such a fun event.  Please see below for the fun competitions the pupils can take part in.  All entries will need to arrive on or before March 1st ready for our special morning.

Here are the headlines this term.

Parent Evening  26th and 27th February - You should have received a link to book your time slot.  This will be an opportunity for you to speak to a member of the pod staff about your child's progress.  Please can we ask that you stick to the allocated time so other parents are not kept waiting.   Any issues with booking, please email the office.

St David's Eisteddfod &  Marchnad Dydd Gwyl Dewi March 1st.  We will be holding our traditional "fun" Eisteddfod with all the pupils in the morning.  Here are the competitions they can enter from home.

Leek Olympics - This year we are going all out and hosting the 'Leek Olympics'. We know how much you all love our Heaviest Leek competition, but why limit the fun to just one category?

There are 4 categories you can enter in:

    • Heaviest Leek

    • Longest Leek

    • Smallest Leek

    • Best Dressed Leek

One leek can only enter one category, however, you may enter each category with a different leek. Please clearly label your leeks with your child's name and category.

Design a Welsh Sports Kit - We are starting a new competition this year and would love for your children to get involved. We want to encourage our pupils to design a sports kit for their favourite sport. Sewing, sketching, painting, natural resources... the creative world is your oyster!

All entries need to be in by the morning of Friday March 1st 2024.

Please can pupils arrive in school dressed in Welsh costumes or red tops ready for our celebration morning assembly.

In the afternoon, from 1.30pm, we will hold a marchnad in the marquee and a special Caffi Cynefin will be open.  If you are able to attend, you are welcome to collect your child to visit the stalls.  If not you can send your child in with up to £2 to spend.  Each pod will be having their own stall and each pod will be letting you know how you can help.   We will update you with more information nearer the time.

Easter Eggstravaganza Event - We are very excited to be holding our  Easter Eggtravaganza  on Thursday 21st March and  are  praying for a dry day.  If you are able to help out with any Easter cakes, cookies, soft drinks etc, please send them in.

    Here are the details:-

After the parade the pupils will return to their pods.  If you would like to collect them at this point just stand in the usual pick up place and the teachers will see you.   This is an opportunity for parents and community to come together for a chat and a catch up, so please feel free to use our outside benches and enjoy the occasion.

Mr G's Internet Safety Tip of the Week: In-App purchases - It's not always easy to spot in-app purchases. You might download a free game app but then find out that you need to make an "in-app purchase" to unlock the next level. If you choose to make the purchase, you'll be charged an additional amount, which will be deducted from the credit card or payment method linked to your device. To learn how to avoid in-app purchases, please click here

What a blustery and grey week!  And the road works have been rather a challenge. A huge thank you to all those parents who are supportive and "upbeat" when they see us under pressure.  As the head I am so grateful for the community that always comes together when things are difficult.  Big thanks to the staff too who go above and beyond their roles to keep our pupils safe and learning.

Welsh Government visited our Caffi this week and were impressed with our pupils skills' and dedication to their work.  Thank you to the parents and community members who turned up to support too.   We are so very proud of our "World of Work" and as we say in Llanrhidian "Education is so serious, it has to be fun!"

The new Spring 2 booking forms are now out for Early Bird Club and Clwb Cierios.  Thanks to those who have already booked and paid.  Click here for the links.

Easter will be here before we know it and we will be running our traditional Easter raffle. Please could you support his with a small easter egg, item, wine or gift for the hampers.   We will hold a special raffle draw on the last day of term.

With more and more budget cuts to education, we will be facing an even harder year from April.  We are reaching out to local businesses for sponsorship support.  This month a local firm sponsored us a new sports kit - thank you so much!   We also need support to pay for the marquee, more kits, resources for outdoor learning, replacement of broken giant polydron; and lots more.  If you know a local business who might be able to support us, please put them in touch.

Another great week has flown by.  We are really excited about our "Make do and Mend" topic and there are some wonderful activities being planned across the school. You will soon be sent your Pod Planning Overview (PPOs) to give you a taste of just some of the learning that has been planned "with" the pupils.  Fore More information about how we plan our curriculum please see our Curriculum for Learning Policy.

Caffi Cynefin is well underway, and our pupils are working hard to remember all the things they need to do to keep our customers happy and safe.  Next week we have some Welsh Government official visiting our caffi to ask us about how it supports and benefits the pupils and the community.  It would be great if you could be there!

As we are trying to reduce paper we have now moved to to an electronic form should you need to request staff to administer prescribed medicine.  You can find this on our website on the "Health Matters" page, however we will always send you the link if you need it. (Just email the office)  Click here to see the form.

Please look at our premises plea below to help us with resources for learning.   Before you throw anything out - please ask us if we could use it first.  You will be surprised what we can re-use!

Here are the headlines this term.

Mr G's Internet Safety Tip of the Week: Help your child recognise phishing attempts and suspicious links. It is impossible to keep track of everything your child does online. Nowadays, there are multiple apps and games that are specifically designed for children, and they are using phones, tablets, and other smart devices to learn, communicate, and have fun. However, this also means that there are cyber criminals who are targeting children with fraudulent tactics like phishing. Click here for more information on keeping your child safe.

A very happy new year to you all.  We have launched our new whole school topic "Make do and mend!" and I have no doubt there is going to be some amazing learning going on.

Our Caffi Cynefi has re-opened.  Please come along and bring an elderly or isolated person so our pupils can make their day.  We have a new menu and Environmental Health did a spot check yesterday and awarded us with a food standard rating of 5.  On the 25th of January we have some Welsh Government visitors coming to the Caffi.  Please come along if you can.

I need to make you aware of the financial pressures on all schools.  We are running our school with less staff than we have for many years, and are all doing our very best to ensure budget issues impact as little as possible on pupils' learning and well-being.  You can help us greatly with this by not pulling staff away from their core business unless urgent.   For example, please email rather than phone; please do not arrive late and please do not request early pickup unless absolutely necessary because every minute counts in the schools day.  We have set up a new "early pick up" request form online should you need it, and this can be accessed here.

We made good strides with our attendance last term, but we can still do better.  Please help us to help your child to be the best that they can by not booking holidays during term time.  Missed learning experiences can never be re-lived, and pupils with lower attendance will not make as much progress as their peers.

    Here are this week's headlines:

Mr G's Internet Safety Tip of the Week: Teach your child about misinformation.  The rise of digital platforms has made it convenient for people to share information online. However, it has also become challenging to separate genuine and false information. What children encounter on the internet can significantly influence their perception of the world and affect their overall health. Therefore, it is important to educate them about the spreading of misinformation and ways to identify it. Click here here to read more information

    Dear Parents and Carers,

What a term!  We have had a blast and are all ready for a well deserved break.  Just a reminder that we have an INSET day tomorrow and on January 8th when we will be launching our new whole school topic on January 9th.

Mrs Archard will have to take some medical leave at the start of term for a planned procedure.  I am sure you will join me in wishing her well and a speedy recovery.  Mrs Howells will be covering the pod in her absence and this will ensure that there is no impact on pupils' learning.  Mr Dowsett will be leading the planning for the pod and Mr Lisk will continue to support all pupils.

That just leaves me to say have a fabulous Christmas and New Year!  Thank you for all your support and we are looking forward to an amazing 2024.

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Pod PryCop must be exhausted!  Their performance of Joseph was outstanding and we could not have asked more of them.  What an amazing end to an amazing term.  Thank you to  everyone who has turned up and been a wonderful audience.  We really could not do it without you!  Well done to the PryCop Staff who can start to relax a little before the Christmas break.

We have had a number of responses to our "equality matters questionnaire".  Thank you so much for taking the time.  As a school we will continue to tackle any perceived bullying or prejudice on a individual case by case basis and strive to develop our pupils' awareness of fairness, kindness and empathy.  As a headteacher, I remain very proud of our pupils.  When they get things wrong they own up and are always willing to put things right.  It is important to remember that learning goes far beyond maths and literacy and in Llanrhidian we use every opportunity to support pupils in developing their values to become "ethical and informed citizens".

Our questionnaire also brought up the pressures of financial matters.   As a school we recognise that austerity is hitting us all.  Please never feel pressured into supporting us when you cannot.  If you ever need to raise concerns,  you can do so confidentially.  Please remember to reach out to us, we will always do what we can to support.   This year we have arranged food hampers, Mr X and were able to provide a free Santa for every pupil.  However, the budgets ahead look even more challenging, and every pound we raise really does help us to support our learners.

Thank you to those who have already booked 'Early Bird Craft Club' and 'Clwb Ceirios' for the spring term. Please ensure that the form is filled in and payment is made at least 7 days in advance. Please click here to book your slot.  We are currently not making enough next half term to cover staffing costs in the early bird club, but we are now covering the costs of Clwb Ceirios.  We will keep you posted with our concerns regarding Early Bird Club.

Here are the Christmas Term headlines:

An Evening with Llanrhidian School Choir @Llanrhidian Church Tuesday 19th December @ 4:30pm - Our wonderful choir will be performing in our beautiful church.  This final Christmas event will set you up for the holiday! we will keep the pupils involved after school and meet you there.  More information has been sent to those involved.

Mr G's Internet Safety Tip of the Week: Parents and carers need to help their children consider the validity of online information with their children.  Click here to watch this excellent video about misinformation.

Budget and Sponsorship - With all schools facing further budget cuts next year we will be reaching out to local businesses to help support the school.  If you know anyone who can help with the costs of sports kits, marquee hire, resources, etc please ask them to get in touch.

What a week! A huge da iawn to our pili-pala, pengwins and pysgodyns for their wonderful shows. It was an absolute pleasure to see them all so confident and happy on the stage. Diolch to all you grown ups at home, who supported the shows by bringing costumes, props and by buying a cuppa... every pound really does help our school to "be the best it can be". Diolch yn fawr to our wonderful staff for all their brilliant work in helping ensure the pupils shine.  It is over to PryCop now who will perform Joseph next week. If you know of anyone who would like a ticket we still have availability for both Tuesday shows and Thursday afternoon. The bigger the audience the better! Our pupils and staff have worked extremely hard and cannot wait to perform!

With budget cuts,  and less staff to do the same amount of work, we are asking for your help and support.  Unless urgent, please could all communication be made via email rather than phone calls.  If you need to speak to a member of staff, please request this in an email and we can get back to you when we can.  I hope you understand our plea, as it would really free up staff to do the core workload expected of schools.

Our booking system remains open for our 'Early Bird Craft Club' and 'Clwb Ceirios' for the spring term. Please ensure that the form is filled in and payment is made at least 7 days in advance. Please click here to book your slot.  We are currently not making enough next half term to cover staffing costs in either club.  With your support this can all change and secure the clubs for another half term.

Our Christmas Fayre was a blast!  Thank you to all those who supported us, we really appreciate how we can all come together as a community!  This really is Cynefin, and it gives a sense of togetherness for our pupils that cannot be bought!

We raised much needed funds for our school yesterday, and this has never been so important.  I am sure you saw the Welsh Autumn Budget Statement which outlined huge cuts to education.  We will be feeling these cuts next year and we will be keeping you informed and updated.

Christmas Jumper and Bring a Raffle Prize Day is on December 8th.  Please support our raffle and if you know anyone who is willing to provide a larger "stand alone" prize, please let us know.  We have a great following on instagram now, and can use this to say thank you to local businesses.  (see below for more information)

However, 36% of parents confess that they do not know where to seek help or resources on online safety, despite discussing their children's online activities on a regular basis (77%). To initiate a conversation on online safety, you can either click on the link here or take this quiz to provide you with a platform for discussion.

Full steam ahead at Llanrhidian.  We seem to be like the proverbial swan, looking calm on the surface but paddling like mad underneath.  However, we would not have it any other way as the staff love this time of year.  Thank you to all those parents who are helping us by volunteering for our Marchnad Nadolig, if you are able to help out please let us know.  We are now going to start earlier, from 2pm, so we can fit in all the Santa visits.  However, please come along when it suits you.

Governors met this week to discuss the financial situation of the Early Bird Craft Club.  We are currently making a significant loss each term.  We find that our only option will be to increase the cost of this provision to meet the staffing costs. From January the cost of the club will be £30 per half term. (£20 per sibling).  This still equates to less than £1 per session.  To keep this provision going, please use it!

Please note new diary date for "Christmas Jumper & Dinner Day" is Thursday 21st December  2023.
